Best way for now if you have an older car:
1. Figure out how much your tank holds.
2. Jot down how many gallons you've filled up and how many miles you've gone in between each fill up.
3. After 2 or 3 times, you should be able to deduct what your actual MPG is.

If you want to know EXACTLY how many miles per gallon your vehicle gets--When you fill up your gas tank, do it yourself. Fill it up to the LAST DROP. Then to check your mileage for the highway drive til your tank is half empty or almost empty. Then refill it- again, to the LAST DROP. Divide the number of gallons into the miles driven and there you have it. You can't get any more scientific and precise than that! Do the same for city driving. With city driving the more you get in and out of your car with restarting it, the less MPG you will get as opposed to CONTINUOUS driving in the city.
